Epic Universe is Universal Orlando’s newest theme park and it is changing the Orlando vacation landscape in a huge way.

- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic
- How to Train Your Dragon: Isle of Berk
- Dark Universe
- Celestial Park
For families with older kids, teens, and Harry Potter fans, Epic Universe feels incredibly exciting and immersive. Universal designed this park to compete directly with Disney World, and honestly, they did a very good job.
One thing families should understand before booking, though, is that Epic Universe is not simply “another Disney.”
The vibe is completely different.
Disney World Still Wins for Younger Kids
If your kids are younger, especially under age 8 or 9, Disney World is still usually the easier and more magical vacation.
Disney simply has more attractions designed for younger children and more variety for families who are not focused on thrill rides.
Magic Kingdom alone has:
- Peter Pan’s Flight
- Winnie the Pooh
- Dumbo
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Buzz Lightyear
- Character experiences
- Parades
- Fireworks
Disney also tends to feel less intense overall.
Epic Universe is visually stunning, but many of the rides are bigger, faster, darker, or more screen-based than what some younger children are used to.
That does not mean younger kids cannot enjoy Epic Universe. Many absolutely will. But Disney World still feels more balanced for families with small children.
Epic Universe Is Incredible for Teens and Tweens
This is where Universal becomes VERY competitive.

…Epic Universe may honestly be more exciting than Disney for them. My teenage daughter loves Disney but she said she enjoys the rides more at Universal and Epic Universe.
The Ministry of Magic area is one of the most anticipated theme park lands Universal has ever built. Harry Potter fans are already planning entire vacations around it.
Super Nintendo World is also a massive draw for families with gaming-obsessed kids and teens.
Universal overall tends to appeal more to families looking for bigger thrills and more intense rides.
Universal Is No Longer Just a “2 Day Add-On”
This is probably the biggest shift happening in Orlando right now.
For years, many families treated Universal Orlando as a quick add-on to a Disney vacation. Maybe two park days squeezed into a mostly Disney trip.
That really is not the case anymore.
With Epic Universe opening, Universal has officially become a full week vacation destination in my opinion.

- The new resort hotels
- Immersive Harry Potter experiences across multiple parks
…families can now stay fully inside the Universal “bubble” the same way they do at Disney.
Universal has done a really good job creating that immersive vacation feel where you can stay on property, use transportation, walk to entertainment, spend days exploring different parks, and never really feel like you need to leave.
The biggest difference now is less about whether Universal can provide a full vacation experience and more about the type of experience your family wants.
Disney still leans more classic, nostalgic, and character-focused.
Universal feels more thrilling, modern, high-energy, and immersive for older kids and teens.
Honestly, Orlando vacations are changing fast because, for the first time in a long time, Disney truly has major competition.
What About Cost?
This is where things get tricky.
Many people assume Universal Orlando is automatically much cheaper than Disney World. That is not always true anymore.
Epic Universe tickets are in very high demand right now, and Universal hotels near the new park are pricing aggressively during peak travel periods.
Disney can still be expensive, especially with Lightning Lanes and deluxe resorts, but there are also more budget options available.
The best value really depends on:
- How long you are staying
- Whether you want Express Pass
- How many parks you are visiting
- Where you stay
- Your travel dates
